The Numbers That Decide It

Income: €2,849 a month, on paper
200% of Spain's minimum wage, shown through contracts, invoices and bank statements that match. A spouse adds €1,069 a month, each further family member €355. Savings can top up a shortfall; only the main applicant's earned income counts toward the threshold itself.

Where you apply changes what you get
Through UGE in Spain: up to three years, resolved in about 20 business days. Through a consulate abroad: one year, which does not count toward long-term residency until converted. Most of our clients who can apply from inside Spain do — the difference compounds.

Qualification: a degree or three years
A university degree in your field, or three years of documented professional experience. One of the two, evidenced — not both, and not neither.

Employees: the social security question
Remote employees need their social security position resolved — and UGE's practice on US Certificates of Coverage tightened in 2026. There are working routes (contractor status among them); which fits you is a case-level answer, and exactly the kind of thing your case manager settles before filing.

The tax carrot
DNV holders working for a foreign employer can apply for the Beckham regime: a flat 24% on Spanish-source income up to €600,000, for up to six years. Freelancers on the autónomo route cannot — one more reason the structure of your application matters.
